B.Sc. NAUTICAL SCIENCE

B.Sc. Nautical Science is a 3-year undergraduate course that focuses on providing students with the necessary knowledge and skills required to become a deck officer in the merchant navy and it is divided into six semesters. This course is designed to prepare students for a career in the shipping industry and offers a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical training.

B.Sc. Nautical Science is a 3-year undergraduate course that focuses on providing students with the necessary knowledge and skills required to become a deck officer in the merchant navy and it is divided into six semesters. This course is designed to prepare students for a career in the shipping industry and offers a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical training.

The course curriculum covers a range of topics related to shipping and nautical science, including ship stability, navigation, meteorology, ship construction, cargo handling, communication, maritime law, and marine pollution prevention. Students will also receive Basic STCW training in firefighting, first aid, survival at sea, and other essential skills during the course.

After the course, students will be required to undergo a mandatory 12 months of sea training on board ships, which will enable them to gain hands-on experience in various aspects of ship operations, including navigation, cargo handling, and maintenance whilst following training record books.

Entry Requirements

To apply for the B.Sc. Nautical Science program, candidates must meet the following entry requirements:

  1. Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)/Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME):

    • Select Seascope Maritime Academy as the first choice institution and achieve a score above the Academy’s stipulated cut-off mark.
    • Required JAMB Subject Combination includes:
      • English Language
      • Mathematics
      • Physics
      • Geography
  2. Screening and Aptitude Test:

    • Candidates must pass a Screening Exercise or Aptitude Test as required by the Academy’s Management/Regulatory Authority.
    • Candidates must also pass a Medical and Physical Fitness Test.
  3. O-Level Requirements:

    • Candidates must have five (5) credit passes at O-Level (WASC, GCE, NECO, NABTEB, etc.), which should include:
      • English Language
      • Mathematics
      • Physics
      • Geography
      • Any other relevant science subject
    • All credits must be obtained in no more than two (2) sittings.
  4. Age Requirement:

    • Candidates should not exceed 21 years at the time of admission, must be single, and are required to remain single throughout the duration of the program.

Graduates of this course can expect to have a challenging and rewarding career that offers excellent opportunities for growth and advancement in the marine sector leading to STCW A- II/2 Chief Mates/ Masters CoC on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more, and they may also pursue further higher education in the field of nautical science, maritime studies, and maritime law, such as MSc, MBA or LLM.
